Civil Rights Icon Johnnie Carr Passes Away

Museum Without Walls was very sad to learn of the death of Civil Rights icon, Johnnie Carr. Mrs. Carr had been a fixture in our American Civil Rights history programs for almost four years.

Johnnie Carr

She spoke to MWW groups of all ages but it was the young people that made her light up. Mrs. Carr was passionate about passing on her history and life lessons to future generations. We invite you to read about Mrs. Carr's legacy here.

You can also take a moment to listen to Mrs. Carr in her own words.

We have collected  thoughts and remembrances from some of our participants to honor who she was to us.  We are honored to share a few of them below.  If you would like to add your own remembrance of Mrs. Carr, we encourage you to share them with us.

"I am extremely saddened by her loss. Her picture with me has sat on my desk since the trip. Whenever I look at it I remember holding Mrs. Carr's hand as we walked to her car. It was one of the most moving experiences in my life because I was in awe of this woman.  I had so many questions to ask her that I was just too nervous to ask but just being in her presence was enough to make me a better person.  She was a grandmother figure not only to me but this entire country as we moved (and continue to move) towards racial equality." - Ari Schorr
