American Civil Rights

Civil Rights Activist Johnnie Carr was a vital part of the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1954. She served along side Dr. Martin Luther King as founders and administrators of the Montgomery Improvement Association. She and her husband allowed their son to serve as a plaintiff in a lawsuit to desegregate Montgomery County Schools. Mrs. Carr passed away on February 22nd, 2008.

When Martin Luther King Jr. came to Memphis it was at the invitation of Rev. Billy Kyles. Dr. King was there to try and help resolve the city's tense sanitation strike.
